Amazon.com Review
Fast and furious, 3dfx's Voodoo3 3000 card gives you blazing 3-D for the latest and most demanding games. If you're a hard-core gamer in search of the fastest 3-D action, then you'll want to get your hands on this gem of a graphics card.

The Voodoo3 3000's extensive feature set includes 3dfx's patented single pass, single cycle multi-texturing, dual 32-bit texture rendering pipeline, alpha blending, single pass, single-cycle bump mapping, gouraud shading, DVD hardware assist, 128-bit 2-D accelerator and--if that isn't enough for you--a TV/S-Video-out connector. With a core clock rate of 166 MHz and 350-MHz RAMDAC, this card offers impressive 3-D performance.

Installing the Voodoo3 3000 was a snap as the manual walks you step by step through the process. We tested the Voodoo3 3000 on a 333-MHz Celeron system with DirectX 6.1 at a resolution of 800 x 600. The card managed an impressive 58 frames per second in our Quake II time demo--very near 3dfx's claim of 60 frames per second.

We would love to see 3dfx support 32-bit color at some point in the future, especially since Quake III will support true-color textures. Additionally, 3dfx's Voodoo cards only support a 256 x 256 texture size, which will experience a decrease in image quality once game manufacturers begin supporting 2,048 x 2,048 texture sizes. However, 3dfx's advantage at this point lies in its proprietary Glide API (application program interface) and its clout within the 3-D graphics card arena--two good reasons why Voodoo3 3000 is a number one choice for those seeking the most intense gaming experience.

Pros:

  • Superb image quality
  • Impressive frame rate
  • Extensive game support
  • Glide API support

Cons:

  • No 32-bit output
  • Maximum memory of 16 MB
  • Limited by 256 x 256 texture size

3video capturing, Oct 12, 2023
I noticed using 3 different softwares for video capturing that it dropped too many frames. The picture came out choppy not synchronizing with the audio.

4Despite it's age it can very much hold it's own!, Feb 13, 2023
I bought a Voodoo3 3000 PCI some time ago and then upgraded to a Voodoo5 5000 - This was great but my new machine does not support it - so I put back in my old PCI Voodoo3 expecting a real let down and I can tell you it's a pleasant suprise, Quake 3, Unreal, Alien v Predator, Star Trek Armada II and Kingpin are just some of the games I use and they run superbly - No juddering, freezing or glitching just smooth good quality action.

Now 3dfx has been bought out by nVidia look at the ... site for excellent new drivers which keep this amazing card bang up to date.

2Be sure that you have an extra cooling fan inside !!, Dec 20, 2022
If you are a tech savvy lives in a hot climate area and the most of your PCI slots are already occupied, please make sure that you have an extra cooling fan inside the machine to blow out the heat.
The card emits significant heat and it does not come along with attached cooling fan. Attached static cooler is not enough.
My card has broken after nine months.

2An old card, Nov 13, 2022
Tecnologically, this card is out of date. Spend your money for a new generation card. If you are one of those Voodoo fans, at least try the new series.

5Still a pretty decent card, Nov 10, 2022
First of all, this is not the End-all video card. But it does combine good price and performance and the best supported drivers in the gaming world (one should expect this as 3dfx basically created the 3D accelerator market). This card runs HalfLife : CounterStrike Mod with the WickedGL(.com) drivers at around 20-50 FPS, which is extremely playable (On a 500Mhz K6-2, 64MB RAM). But when I used it (after a FlashBIOS update) with my G4/400, performance was lacking in Quake3. This card runs neck and neck with a Rage 128 Pro AGP in the Mac world. I suspect the drivers and the somewhat dated hardware are to blame. I'm going to get a Radeon for my G4, and a GeForce II MX for my PC in the future. This was a great video card a year ago, but it's starting to show its age. If you really can't afford the extra ... for a GeForce II MX, this is a decent video card.
