It took nearly a decade to find a mutually agreeable screenplay, but the stars and director of Pretty Woman finally reunited to make Runaway Bride, wisely avoiding any attempt to recapture the 1990 film's elusive magic. The result is a perfectly pleasant romantic comedy that would've fared better critically (despite boffo box office) if it hadn't been overshadowed by its blockbuster predecessor. It's certainly a more credible film than Pretty Woman, trading a far-fetched fairy tale (hooker hooks up with tycoon? bah!) for a more amiably conventional plot about big-city reporter Ike Graham (Richard Gere) who falls for a small-town handywoman Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) with a nasty habit of fleeing from the altar in a recurring state of premarital panic.

Both characters are instantly likable, and the smooth dialogue by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott only occasionally panders to sitcom cuteness. And despite his routine sacrifice of subtle craft for commercial appeal, director Garry Marshall knows when to trust his stars and material, lending this movie a casual charm (aided by a terrific supporting cast) that never feels forced or artificial. The whole thing's utterly predictable, riding on the suspenseless question of whether Maggie will dump her sports-nut fiancé (Christopher Meloni) and tie the knot with Ike. It's a foregone conclusion after the usual games of romantic cat and mouse, but the chemistry between Roberts and Gere is undeniable, and with a decade's worth of additional stardom between them, they shine as brightly as ever. --Jeff Shannon

4Life imitates art, May 20, 2023
Seems that if one was to pick up news paper nowadays that the premise of this story is not that far fetched.

To those people that do not like movies that are formula or predictable, this is probably not one of those movies that you would like. For those of you who are expecting some sort of breakthrough movie like "Pretty Woman" (1990), this movie is probably not one that you would like.
Now with that said, this is a great formula and many of the details are not predictable. It is the interaction between the actors and the visuals (multi colored hair) that give this movie its worth. This movie contains psychology and morals that would give Gary Zukav a run for his money.
We already know how wonderful the interaction is between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Don't overlook the cast of supporting actors that even give the two-dimensional characters a third dimension. Remember Rita Wilson form "Sleepless in Seattle"(1993)? Well she plays the ex-wife of Richard Gere and adds some stability to the hectic events. And who can forget Joan Cusack form "My Blue Heaven" (1990)? She plays Peggy Flemming.
Now in stead of spending time comparing, lets spend some time being entertained. All in all it's cute movie in worth watching.

1More On-Screen "Magic" from Roberts/Gere, May 5, 2023
Its a shame we're only treated to ONE movie per decade of the dynamic duo of Julia "world's largest mouth" Roberts and Richard "Hampster" Gere. I found myself laughing out loud - not once - during this movie.

1More Trashy Roberts, May 3, 2023
Paramount should have been shut down for making a film that glorifies a woman with total disrespect for her fiance(s), men in general, and everyone else in her life. Roberts is her usual strange self and should be sent the bill for all the resources wasted finding Jennifer Wilbanks after she decided it would be cool to imitate this braindead movie.

2Now a reality show in a town near you, May 2, 2023
Not so funny when it happens to you, is it? Now that the public has turned on the real runaway bride, attempting to press criminal charges for her flighty behavior, we can appreciate just how unreal this movie was, and that "Julia" would have left lots of wreckage behind her as she bolted from each wedding. Instead, the whole tragedy is played for laughs and, ironically, press coverage. Both Gere and Julia have seen better days, and have been playing themselves in lackluster films as long as anyone can remember. Watch "Goodbar" instead to see the real Gere.

5best Julia Roberts flick, Mar 6, 2023
In my opinion, this movie was much better than "Pretty Woman." It was more realistic, had more charming characters, had much more beautiful scenery, and was a lot funnier than Gere and Roberts previous flick. This movie is safe for anyone over 13. Get a copy of it from amazon today. You will not regret it. It is a classic.
