Amazon.com's Best of 2001
They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's.

Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

4Surprising, Apr 25, 2023
When I first heard about the hype on this book, I did want to test it out. I just kept putting it off because the genre was not really the type of reading I usually go for. Last week I finally said I'll just get it over with before the movie comes out.
I cannot believe how much I liked it. I read it in one night. The magical pants were a very nice touch. I can't pick a favorite of the girls, because they all have great personalities that remind me of myself at that age.
I have to say that the reason I gave the book four stars was because a lot of adults may get irritated by the writing. It didn't bother me so much because I feel that girls at that age did talk like that and the author just wanted to reflect on that.
I think everyone should at least try this book out, children and adults. You'll at least have a little fun.

4The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Apr 25, 2023
Four teenagers living in Washington D.C. have to split up for the first time in their lives. It is the first summer they will not be together. They think their whole life is over until Carmen takes out the pair of jeans she bought at a thrift shop. The girls get through the summer by wearing the jeans and then passing them on.
The four teens, Carmen, Tibby, Lena, and Bridget were all born in September, hence their name, The Septembers. Their moms were all in a yoga class together and became friends. Their friendship drifted away over the years, but their daughters became best friends. Carmen brings the pants with her on her trip to visit her father in South Carolina. Tibby is into moviemaking and is staying home for the summer to make a documentary. Lena is Greek and on her summer vacation to Greece, she brings along the traveling pants. Bridget loves to play soccer and brings the traveling pants with her to Baja, California for soccer camp. The traveling pants help the girls through their summer problems.
This book is followed by The Second Summer of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Girls in Pants. It is an excellent book with a lot of interesting parts. It is very easy to connect with the characters in this book. It is a very fast paced book with a lot of action. Some parts are very funny, but some can be sad. At first I thought it was very hard to remember which character was which. But once I started reading more of the story, I knew who each one was.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is an excellent fictional book that many teens love. Ann Brashares is a wonderful author. In one paragraph it feels like you are a character and you have your problem, then you read the next paragraph and become the different character. It is very easy to interact with each character because it feels like you are them. It is a great book containing humor, love, and compassion.

5Great Book, Apr 25, 2023
Despite being out of the intended demographic for this book (I'm 25), I was deeply moved by it and actually shed some tears. It's not rare for me to cry at movies, but it takes a bit more for a book to get to me. It's just a great depiction of relationships and being open to new ones.
