Editorial Reviews:
Those who discovered Tyler Perry through leftfield box office hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman may be surprised by Madea's Class Reunion. Sure, there are similarities, but this Perry production is a filmed musical rather than a feature film. The storyline concerns several African-American characters of different ages, all staying at the same hotel while dealing with a variety of problems, like infidelity, domestic abuse, and lack of faith. Writer/director Perry plays two of them--shiftless bellhop/bartender Willy and gun-toting granny Mabel "Madea" Simmons, who is also featured in Diary. Interestingly, Madea, his best-known creation, doesn't actually hit the scene until act two (almost 40 minutes into the play). Also, Perry doesn't sing, but a number of strong vocalists, including Perry regular David Mann (Brown), tackle the gospel-style musical numbers with gusto. Madea's Class Reunion was taped live at Detroit's Fox Theater on September 13th, 2003 (Perry's 34th birthday). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4I Laughed So Hard I Cried, Mar 3, 2023
Madea's Class Reunion was the first Tyler Perry production I had ever seen. I didn't know what to expect, but what I got was simply non-stop laughter. Everyone was an absolute delight from the "crazy" bell hop to Madea (both played by Perry) to Brown and the other supporting cast. And, I'm sure it is not easy trying to keep up with Perry as he freestyles.

I'm not a big fan of musicals so the many songs were not a big hit with me, but I was still "wowed" by the quality of the voices, especially in one of the last songs, "It's You" sung by a spurned wife to both her husband and his mistress.

I would recommend anyone to check out the DVDs as well as the new movie version of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I'm certainly going to catch one of the live plays when I can.

4It's funny but..., Dec 13, 2022
...I saw this on the DVD version and some people say it funnier when you see it in person cuz he change it up a little bit. For what I saw on the DVD version, it was funny but not as funny as I hoped it to be. After seeing, Madea's Family Reunion, I was looking forward to this to be the funniest one yet because Family Reunion was really funny.

After seeing this, I was like, "What happened?" If you want to see it, go ahead and see it because it's funny but I didn't find it funnier than the previous one, Madea's Family Reunion.

Again, like I said for Meet the Browns, maybe it's the supporting cast or something. Madea is always funny but I guess it's just the people that are around Madea that makes it a little dull sometimes. Tyler Perry has good comedic timing but if the person he's bouncing off of don't...then the joke isn't going to go over well..

Again I say...It's funny but...
