| | Description: This video for teaching little ones about the potty is one of the most successful because kids can easily relate to the characters from the popular series Bear in the Big Blue House. Even though each character has a specific problem (asking for permission, fear of the unknown, bathroom etiquette), the video scores points for the gentleness and calm it communicates to kids. Bear is always upbeat and helpful, a great coach for kids. The songs are catchy too--"Potty Chair" has a rhyming scheme that goes from "underwear" to "millionaire," and there's a hysterical psychedelic '60s number. Older kids may benefit from watching as a confidence builder. By the end, the kiddies may be running to the bathroom to practice their talents, shouting, "I'm a Toileteer!" The characters are gentle and real, and help kids learn some of those important basic lessons. The only thing we don't like is the "Shadow" segments, which my whole family finds quite twisted and creepy, so we just fast forward. After watching MANY other kids shows, we came to the conclusion that most of them will help you raise a mentally DEFICIENT child, like Barney, or the Teletubbies, which offer negligible amounts of actual substance. Entertain your kids, yes, but don't retard their growth in the process. Give them something entertaining that will engage them and help them to learn from. Bear In The Big Blue House is one of the only shows we let our daughter watch. She had a vocabulary of over 50 clearly understandable words (including Bear, Ojo, and Tutter) at 14 months old, and is now assembling simple sentences at 16 months (like "the dog is barking"). She also sings songs on key as well! WOW! Thanks to the BitBBH potty training show, she is also working on POTTY TRAINING! I'm not saying Bear is THE reason, but he helped along the way. Thanks Bear! | | Warning- these potty songs get stuck in your head! This video is great (if unfortunately a little catchy- I say unfortunately because cooking dinner while singing "the mystic order of the toileteers" will definatley have your husband a little worried)But my 2 yr loves this video. He is entertained for sure but after seeing it he felt welcome to the bathroom. Before when I had tried to stick him on a potty or toilet- he would freak out. It was too scary- too much pressure- I am not sure. he is still not potty trained but after seeing the video he was very excited to try going through the motions (at least) of using the bathroom. He sat on the toilet, pretended to wipe and flushed and washed his hands. Now I know none of that is especially impressive when the act in which we so anticipate wasn't actually performed but I think it is progess. If you have an older child this is is very reinforcive (there is a scene where one of the animals has an accident and bear is very kind in that situation letting her know that its ok), I would however recommend buying this video with another one that actually shows real children using the potty for the purpose intended so that your child doesn't get confused- thinking it is all a game of pretend. I am getting my boy another video with real kids so that he can get a better grasp of what's actually supposed to go down in the bathroom. But the video will definately make your kid and you feel more comfortable talking about the whole process. | | Good video undermined by racist stereotyping Like a lot of the Bear videos, this has great scripting, catchy tunes and good puppeteering. However, the big let down for me was the song introduced by Shadow, who is an annoying representation of a bog-Oirish charachter complete with inane diddly-eiddly fiddle music. The song is quite disgraceful really - cut-out figures supposed to be blacks in 1970s disco attire, complete with frizzy Afro hairstyles, thick lips and wide noses. At best you might say it's racist stereotyping, at worst downright insulting to African-Americans who might buy this video. Come on, Muppet People, you can do better than that! |
