The worlds only true cyclonic vacuum, generating 100,000 g of centrifugal force and pulling dirt into an indestructible canister made from the same material used for crash helmets. Named for both its power and its ruthless approach to pet hair problems, the Dyson DC07 Animal upright is a piece of engineering wizardry designed by James Dyson, the inventor of cyclonic vacuums. A hit in Europe for years, Dyson vacuums are new to the American market. At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allerg. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine. Suitable for bare floors and carpets, the Dyson upright features a 14-inch cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles. A foot pedal switches off the brush roll for bare floors, and the nozzle automatically adjusts for various carpet heights. For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum also comes with a cleverly stowed, 17-foot quick-release hose with a reversible extension-wand handle. Onboard accessories include a crevice tool, a dusting brush, an upholstery attachment, and the Animal turbo tool. Designed for lint and stubborn pet hair, the turbo tool features an air-powered brush bar to extract hair from furniture, stairs, pet beds, cars, and other tight spaces. Made from the same material used in crash helmets, the vacuum is unquestionably durable. Plus, the design only puts 4 pounds of weight on the handle, so pushing and turning is easy. This model comes with a 35-foot power cord. It also includes a carpet care kit--a canister of Groom Zorb odor-absorbent carpet cleaning powder and a bottle of Dyzolv spray for spills and stains. --Emily Bedard Editor's note: This is a reconditioned vacuum. Reconditioned generally means that the vacuum has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the vacuum back to like-new condition. Some appliances may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Glad I bought reconditioned instead of new My Animal arrived quickly in a few days w/supersaver free shipping. I thought $350 was alot to pay for a vacuum but I wanted a good one that didn't have extra costs for filters or bags. This is my first Dyson so I was ok with trying a reconditioned unit. It looks and operates like a brand-new machine, but the enclosed warranty is 6 months instead of 2 years. They ought to have made it 2 years for peace of mind. I read the Nov 2003 Consumer Reports (CR) and the Dyson DC07 was ranked 14th. Rank 1) Hoover WindTunnel Self Propelled Ultra, Rank 2) Kenmore Progressive with Direct Drive Rank 3) Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra ranked 3rd. All three choices cost less than the Dyson. If you have time (I didn't), they may be worth investigating. The Dyscon does clean well, but not $350 well, perhaps $250. Positives: - The Animal turbo tool is awesome for cleaning in tight areas or vacuuming sofas. I don't have pets but it has found a ton of my wifes long hair. - The clear canister is a handy & cool way to see how much dirt the vacuum is removing. It's also easy to empty. - Comes with lots of useful attachments, but no handy place to put all of them so they'll end up in the back of a closet (yes a few attach to the vacuum). Negatives: - Doesn't clean along the carpet edges very well. Needs an attachment for that. - Doesn't have an automatic cord retract, but does have lots & lots of cord. - No suction control or ability to lightly vacuum over area rugs. - The unit is tall enough to not go under most things, so the attachments are a must. - The on/off switch is cheapy and will probably be the first thing to fault. It's true folks, it really works like everyone says!!! Wow!!! I had a hard time making the decision to purchase this sweeper but was desperate for assistance with the ongoing battle against my Himalayan's excessive shedding. I've had a Kirby and Electrolux with all the bells and whistles, both well over $1,000 each. For that matter, I've had the Hoover Wind Tunnel and the top Sears canister models. This machine puts them all to shame. I agree that it looks odd but its power and the amount of dirt and animal hair it pulls out of the carpet blows me away. When this vacuum fizzles out, I'll buy another Dyson, the inventor is pure genius. Avoid- you apparently can't return it My dyson reconditioned vacuum overheated the first time I used it. Not an auspicious beginning for a $399 reconditioned vacuum; I decided I'd better send it back while I could. Amazon would not answer any emails I sent to follow their return procedures; eventually I left for a 2 week vacation. Now I'm back and my 30 days are up and I still have not gotten a response. Even worse, I saw an ad for what looked exactly like this machine (even purple) under a different brand name for $134.99 on sale at Kmart. P.S. it feels flimsy. | | | | Listmania!
